A decade ago, the dancehall star Vybz Kartel may have been the single most popular musician in all of Jamaica. His life has changed a lot. Last month, Kartel was found guilty in the murder of his former associate Clive “Lizard” Williams. Today, as Billboard reports, Kartel was handed a life sentence. Three of Kartel’s accomplices, including the dancehall artist Shawn Storm, also got life sentences, and after the sentencing, one juror was arrested and charged with attempting to bribe the jury foreman. Kartel’s trial lasted 58 days and may have been the longest in the history of Jamaica’s circuit court, and several roads in downtown Kingston had to be closed before Kartel was sentenced. He won’t be eligible for parole for 35 years, but there’s some chance that he’ll be allowed to record in prison.
