Chumped – “Hot 97 Summer Jam” (Stereogum Premiere)

Judging by the title of Chumped’s “Hot 97 Summer Jam,” maybe you’d think their timing was a little off. On the East Coast, the heat is already making way for cooler days and it’s only a matter of time before the leaves start to change color. But after one listen, you’d realize the timing couldn’t be any better, because Chumped doesn’t give a shit about the summer — it’s all about the moment after. Summer is an interminable period, marked by longing and desire and hopeless rejection. “We’re reading books/ we’re drinking coffee/ I’m looking at you/ you’re looking through me,” it starts off. “I would wait for you all summer long.” The Brooklyn-based band describes themselves as “bummer punk” and slot in nicely next to fellow punk revivalists like Swearin’ and Cayetana, the latter of which Chumped is playing a few shows with soon. It’s all in the name — this song is an absolute jam. Listen below.
