We’ve known for a while that Joanna Newsom was going to play a role in the film adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s Inherent Vice, but it was only last week that we found out that she would narrate the whole thing. For a novel as densely plotted as Pynchon’s, the narrator will presumably play an important role in making sure the book translates well to screen. She certainly has a large presence in the trailer, which was released online yesterday. The film also stars Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, and Reese Witherspoon, and the film is being scored by Jonny Greenwood. The Paul Thomas Anderson-directed movie will have a wide release in December, but it’s having its world premiere at the New York Film Festival next weekend. Watch the trailer below.
