London producer Ghost Culture, the latest addition to Erol Alkan’s Phantasy label, makes fascinating neon club music that, despite its brainy inclinations, functions just as well as pop. There’s an aggressive post-punk spirit to the synth fluctuations on new single “Answer” that puts Ghost Culture in the same league as Factory Floor. Yet the song is far poppier than that comparison suggests; it exists somewhere down the evolutionary chart from New Order, but haunted with a bleary haze. The humanity is understated, the machinery intense, the results splendid. Hear “Answer” below.
