“Nobody’s Empire,” the second single and video from Belle & Sebastian’s Girls In Peacetime Want To Dance, is also the album’s opening song. Furthermore, Stuart Murdoch calls it “absolutely the most personal [song] I’ve ever written,” telling the story of his health problems as a child. It’s unmistakably a Belle & Sebastian song, leaning toward the band’s earliest twee-folk sounds but with flashes of their more theatrical mid-period records. In the video, directed by Murdoch and Blair Young, shots of model Tamzin Merchant singing Murdoch’s lyrics are interspersed with footage from the album cover shoot and home movies culled from more than 100 B&S fans and the Scottish Screen Archive at the National Library Of Scotland and the Prelinger Archives.
