Doldrums – “My Friend Simjen”

Airick Woodhead of Doldrums emerged from the same Montreal music scene as Grimes, and he dabbles in the same form of electronic-sampling, pastiche pop that she perfected. “My Friend Simjen” is the second single from his forthcoming Sub Pop debut The Air Conditioned Nightmare (it’s named after an essay collection by Henry Miller), and is far less linear than the previously released “Hotfoot.” Once the campy dialogue develops between Simjen and the song’s presumed protagonist around 1:30, their relationship and the song spin off into oblivion.
