The release of Heems’ Eat Pray Thug is rapidly approaching, but up until now we’ve only heard one song from the project, “Sometimes.” A second song is out there now: “Home” is the Das Racist alum’s collaboration with Dev Hynes (Blood Orange), and it turned out better than I could have imagined. Against the kind of sweltering, exotic ’80s pop music Hynes perfected on Cupid Deluxe, Heems raps about love and loss with plainspoken phrases that cut to the core. “All I got is the sweater that you left,” he begins before unspooling a story of hot-blooded romance gone turned to alienation and longing. For a song that involves the come-on “Be my remix to ‘Ignition,'” it’s incredibly sad and poignant. Listen below and prepare to have your guts ripped out.
