The experimental jazz of BADBABDNOTGOOD has long communed with hip-hop, post-punk, and other genres, but their latest album is a full-blown collaboration with the legendary Staten Island rapper Ghostface Killah. As one of the fiercest forces in the Wu-Tang Clan, Ghostface brings his unrelenting East Coast flow to the sinister, splintered soundtrack provided by the Toronto trio. Ominous but still funky, Sour Soul also features a rotating cast of guest stars: DOOM, Danny Brown, Tree and Elzhi all make appearances. It’s one of those records that feels cinematic as it unfolds, an international film noir spotlighting an iconic rapper alongside some upstarts who refused to leave the boundaries of jazz alone. The longer you listen, the more you get the vision. Spend some time with it this weekend, it’s absolutely phenomenal.
Sour Soul is out 2/24 on Lex. Pre-order it here.
