Hop Along are the latest of several great acts to emerge from Philadelphia — is there something in the water over there right now? The pop punk group are readying their sophomore album Painted Shut, which will be out in May. Today they’ve shared “Powerful Man,” and it builds on the razor sharp rawness of the first single “Waitress.” All Hop Along’s songs are little vignettes, and this one paints a disturbingly clear picture of abuse, fear and power dynamics. Frances Quinlan wields her voice like a baseball bat, hitting some of the phrases with a crack of intensity that mirrors the building force of the band behind her. Listen below.
