Watch Solange Debut “Rise,” Her Song For Ferguson And Baltimore

It’s been too long since we’ve heard any new music from Solange Knowles; True, the EP that turned her into an indie star, is now two and a half years old. But Solange is at work on a new album, and last night, she debuted a song that she says will probably be on it. Solange was doing an HBO-sponsored surprise show in L.A. to help hype up the network’s forthcoming Bessie Smith biopic Bessie. And during her set, she debuted a song called “Rise,” which she says she wrote for Ferguson and Baltimore, two places where police killings have lately sparked enormous protests. The song is an airy, beautiful, meditative soul groove — one that seems to focus on inward sadness rather than outward anger. The recorded version is really going to be something. Watch a fan-made video below.

A new Solange album would be a very welcome thing this summer.
