Spirit Club – “Fast Ice” (Stereogum Premiere)

Nathan Williams’ Spirit Club just released their self-titled debut album last week, yet they’re already on to releasing material from LP2. “Fast Ice” is our first taste of the band’s next batch of songs, and it continues applying off-kilter psych idiosyncrasies to the beachy alt-rock Williams made his name on. “I’m so alone, but you’ll never know,” he intones against a wash of naked strums, white noise, and alternate-universe Beach Boys harmonies. “I want you to love me, but why would you care?” Later on, the roles are flipped, but it keeps coming back to a refrain of longing: “I hope you miss me every night.” It’s a gorgeous deconstructed nugget, the kind of song that does a lot with a little. Listen below.

Spirit Club are playing a release show for the first record this Wednesday 5/27 at the Echo in L.A.
