In a little over a week, Netflix is premiering its original Nina Simone documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? To accompany that release, a number of contemporary musicians have recorded covers of the iconic singer’s music, the rights to which are currently the subject of an extremely messy fight between Sony Music and Simone’s estate. These covers will be collected in a compilation entitled Nina Revisited: A Tribute to Nina Simone, to be released next month. Among others, it’ll feature Mary J. Blige, Usher, Common, Alice Smith, Simone’s daughter Lisa, and Lauryn Hill, who also co-produced the album with Robert Glasper and performed at a recent Nina Simone tribute concert after the film premiered at Harlem’s historic Apollo Theater. “Because I fed on this music, both hers and lovers like her, like my basic food, I believed I always had a right to have a voice,” Ms. Hill says. “Her example is clearly a form of sustenance to a generation needing to find theirs. What a gift.” Hear her cover of Simone’s oft-sampled 1965 classic “Feeling Good” and check out the compilation’s full tracklisting below.
