Our own Tom Breihan once said Tamaryn makes “head-blown desert-vista dreampop” and that’s the only way I can imagine her now: standing majestic and windswept in the middle of a desert somewhere, orchestrating synths and strings with graceful, wild gestures. On her new album Cranekiss, Tamaryn spreads her spacious dreampop wider than ever but knows exactly when to reign it in for jagged, cutting moments that transcend the expansiveness. Lead single “Hands All Over Me” is a spectacle of lust and gauzy maximalism, while the title track pulses, piston-like between restraint and exultance. Her newest track, “Last,” is even more subdued, and it might be her most traditional ’80s-pop take of all, channeling Blondie and Pat Benatar in dreamy verses and a razor-sharp chorus. “Last” is a leisurely build, oozing magma-slow into chaos on the short snippets of the chorus, finally fading out in the roar of her howling soprano. Everything ends, and falling apart should always sounded like this. Listen.
