Alex G – “Bug”

Last year’s excellent DSU was many listeners’ introduction to the homespun charms of Alex Giannascoli, but it was actually already his sixth full-length. Still, it’s been a big year for the 22-year-old singer-songwriter — the success of DSU won him a lot of deserved attention, and now he’s signed to Domino for the release of his upcoming seventh album Beach Music. Any worries that this newfound indie-fame would soften up his rough edges are immediately put to rest by the first few seconds of lead single “Bug.” This is definitely the same Alex G we’re dealing with — spidery Pinback guitar lines, warbling keyboards, occasional pitch-shifted chipmunk vocals and all — and “Bug” is another introverted pop gem that belies its LP’s sunny title. Listen below.
