Joanna Newsom is not exactly the kind of artist who shows up on your television very often — at least, not unless you’ve got the Inherent Vice DVD in constant rotation, which I would understand. But as Consequence Of Sound points out, Newsom appeared on the most recent episode of the BBC’s live-performance show Later… With Jools Holland. On that show, she performed an absolutely stunning and entirely-solo version of “Leaving The City,” from her generally lovely new album Divers. The arrangements on Newsom’s records can be so intricate and layered and overwhelming that you miss the simple power of what she’s doing on her own, so it’s awesome to get a chance to see her sitting at her harp on her own, without help. And in watching her fingers working on that harp, we get a better idea of the simple technical skill involved in what she does. Check it out below.
Divers is out now on Drag City.
