Half Japanese – “That Is That” (Stereogum Premiere)

Half Japanese have been around for a long, long time. They helped shape the DIY and lo-fi movements from the last couple of decades, and influenced the likes of Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Kurt Cobain (who had asked the band to open on dates during Nirvana’s In Utero tour). Two dozen EPs, LPs, and live albums later, Half Japanese are set to release their newest full-length LP Perfect in January. It follows the band’s surprise Bingo Ringo EP earlier this year, as well as their 2014 release Overjoyed, and today we’re premiering lead single “That Is That.” Clocking in at barely two minutes, it’s a burst of loud distorted guitars and anarchy-driven drums set to rambling verses that speak about “throwing the devil into the pit.” Chaotic and energetic, short and compact, it’s glaringly characteristic of a band that helped define underground rock as we know it. Listen to the song below accompanied by visuals from founding Half Japanese member Jad Fair.

Perfect will be released on 1/22/16 on Joyful Noise. Pre-order it here.
