LA spitter Open Mike Eagle has a smooth flow that shifts constantly to fit a funky/electro/boom-bap meld. Last year’s underrated Raps For When It’s Just You And The Abyss was very dope, seamlessly bringing together versatile flows and sonics. On this spring’s Hella Personal Film Festival, he teams with UK producer and labelmate Paul White for some fresh tunes. The lead single “Check To Check” is a sweet blend of genre potpourri, with Eagle’s nonchalant stream-of-consciousness average-man raps enveloped by blippy, static-steeped synths, subdued snaps and claps, inventive found sounds, and catchy scat-like phrases. He’s got some clever wordplay going on as well with lines like “My laptop don’t sleep…open and shut case.” It’s time people stop sleeping on this guy, he’s nice. Peep the song below.
