The members of English rock quartet Martha hail from a village called Pity Me, but there’s nothing particularly sad-sack about their music. The straight-edge anarchist vegans boast an eclectic taste that runs the gamut from punk to indie-pop to classic rock, and it all bleeds through on new single “Goldman’s Detective Agency.” With foot-tapping electric riffs embedded inside crisp punk rhythms, the song encapsulates the band’s DIY ethic and upbeat sound. With clever lyrics like, “I keep dreaming that you’ll kill us and we’ll share a shallow grave,” Martha melodically illustrate that even among the corruption in the world, we can still find peace in those close to us. Drummer Nathan Griffin gave some background to DIY:

Playing music is something that is really important to all of us, but it’s also something that takes a lot of time and energy and emotional strain. This record is for everyone who leads a secret double life, devoting every weekend, every day of annual leave, all of their disposable income, every drop of creative energy to something as ethereal as music and art. It’s about persevering and still doing the things you love, even when most normal people can’t understand why on earth you do it.

Though innately adversarial in the DIY punk tradition, above all, this song is charming. It will appear on Martha’s upcoming album Blisters In The Pit Of My Heart, but for now you can hear it below.
