What is going on with Kool A.D.? Earlier this month, the erstwhile Das Racist MC released an EP of Auto-Tune warbling called All Love, and I honestly couldn’t tell if it was a genuine creative experiment or a mocking parody of mainstream rap. Now he’s delivered another EP called Real Talk, which comprises seven tracks of free-associative sing-song excursions over the music from recent radio rap hits. Future’s “Fuck Up Some Commas,” Yo Gotti’s “Down In The DM,” Schoolboy Q’s “Studio,” and Kanye West’s “Real Friends” are among the songs Victor Vazquez slathers with his digitally and chemically altered stunting and political rabble rousing. There’s a perverse beauty to this latest bizarre left turn, but you could also be forgiven for thinking the entire project is a bunch of bullshit. Listen below and see what you make of it.
