One of the highlights of 1997’s Life After Death, the second and last album from the Notorious B.I.G., is “I Got A Story To Tell,” a twisty narrative rap that’s genuinely suspenseful the first time you hear it. On the song, Biggie raps about hooking up with the girlfriend of a New York Knicks player — “I’m in that ass while he play against the Utah Jazz.” When the player comes home unexpectedly, a quick-thinking Biggie just ends up robbing the guy, and he ends the song laughing about the whole episode. It honestly never occurred to me that the story was true, but that hasn’t stopped plenty of people from trying to figure out the identity of the player. And as it turns out, the song may have been true — or true enough, anyway — and we may know which player it’s about.

As Sports Illustrated points out, Fat Joe, a Biggie friend and contemporary, made the revelation during a recent interview on ESPN’s Highly Questionable. Joe says that the song’s target was Anthony Mason. Mason played for the Knicks from 1991 to 1996, and he won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award in 1995. Mason died of a heart attack last year.

Sadly, Mike D’s line about “got my hair cut correct like Anthony Mason” will no longer be Mason’s greatest rap legacy.
