TDE conspiracy lefty Ab-Soul’s next album has been ready for a few months now according to Top Dawg’s Twitter account, but we only just heard the first single “Huey Knew” a couple weeks ago. Soulo’s last album, 2014’s These Days, wasn’t very good, but the first taste of this impending album sees him returning to the hazed out wordplay and speculative introspection that made 2012’s Control System great.
Today “Huey Knew” gets the visual treatment, and it further hints at a return to form. Soul, with his signature lion’s mane and sunglasses, rhymes from a wicker throne in front of a projector screen as some of the most controversial/important moments in American history play behind him. Seeing Donald Trump contextualized in history already is interesting but also very fitting as Willie B’s creepy, ominous beat plays underneath. Everything about this feels like it could have been on Control System, and it bodes well for the forthcoming offering. Check it out.
There’s still no timetable for Ab-Soul’s next album as of yet.
