Sting reopened the Bataclan today, playing the first show at the Paris venue since last year’s devastating terrorist attack. Security at the event was heavy, as the AP reports, with concertgoers — including families of the victims, who were given free tickets — greeted by barricades, body searches, and armed police. Sting spoke to the audience in fluent French, asking for a moment of silence before opening the show with a performance of “Fragile,” the same song he opened his 9/11/01 show with. Watch below.
In re-opening the Bataclan, we have two important tasks to reconcile. First, to remember and honour those who lost their lives in the attack a year ago, and second to celebrate the life and the music that this historic theatre represents. In doing so we hope to respect the memory as well as the life affirming spirit of those who fell. We shall not forget them.
