Washington, DC doom metal overlords the Obsessed started putting out records in 1980, and their whole riff-trudge style has influenced generations of bands. They’ve broken up and reunited a number of times over the years, even as frontman Scott “Wino” Weinrich has gone on to form bands like Saint Vitus and Spirit Caravan. But they haven’t released a new album since 1994, and so it’s big news that they’ve once again reassembled and that they’ve got a new LP, tentatively titled Sacred, coming out next year. Today, as part of the Adult Swim Singles series, they’ve shared their first new song in decades. It’s called “Sodden Jackyl,” and it’s an enormous heaving monster-stomp that could’ve come out at any time in the past 40 years or so. Check it out below.
The new Obsessed album is coming in 2017 on Relapse.
