Shugo Tokumaru’s newest, “Lita – Ruta,” is a concoction of layered percussion and rapturous momentum. The song’s colorful tilt-a-whirl includes a dizzying amount of instrument sounds that I’m not even sure my mind knows how to register. Is that a broken music box at the beginning? “Lita – Ruta” is from his forthcoming LP TOSS, which follows 2012’s In Focus? His new album was intended to be an unedited compilation of recording sessions with fellow musicians including art duo Maywa Denki and Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier. Instead,TOSS turned into an elaborate project taking up more of time than Tokumaru initially anticipated. “Lita – Ruta” is a preview to the Japanese mastermind’s ever-expanding definition of pop.
