Big Thief made their debut with last year’s Masterpiece and are already getting ready to release a sophomore album. Their forthcoming LP is titled Capacity and “Mythological Beauty” is the first single, which was released today along with an accompanying video. It’s fitting that Capacity will be out around the same time as the new season of Game Of Thrones, because this visual echoes the hit show’s aesthetic and tone. Bandmembers Buck Meek and Adrianne Lenker take on the vast wilderness, cast spells, and enter into a new corporeal oblivion in the video directed by Vanessa Haddad and shot by Adam Gundersheimer. “Mythological Beauty” is a fragile and haunting song, and it’s mirrored by this spellbinding, enigmatic story. Singer and guitarist Lenker explained that the group’s second LP is an intimate meditation on self-acceptance:
There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album. The songs search for a deeper level of self-acceptance, to embrace the world within and without. I think Masterpiece began that process, as a first reaction from inside the pain, and Capacity continues that examination with a wider perspective.
