Ensemble Intercontemporain – “Wires” (Comp. Bryce Dessner)

The National’s Bryce Dessner studied music composition at Yale, and in addition to playing guitar in a well-known indie rock band, he’s also become a well-known classical composer, working with the likes of the Kronos Quartet and contributing to the score of The Revenant. He was recently commissioned to write a piece for the French group Ensemble Intercontemporain, which he says is known in Europe as “the Rolls Royce ensemble of New Music,” and WQXR premiered that piece, which is called “Wires,” on today’s Meet The Composer, along with an interview with Dessner. Hear Ensemble Intercontemporain, led by Matthias Pintscher, perform “Wires” live at Paris’ Philharmonie below at around 7:40; Dessner’s interview begins at the 4-minute mark.
