Zooey Deschanel is finally done with New Girl. The long-running Fox sitcom is currently airing its final season, and Deschanel and her castmates have finished filming it. So now, with her calendar open, Deschanel has once again gone back to recording with She & Him, her polished twee-pop duo with M. Ward. And today, the pair has two new songs — or, more realistically, two new versions of one new song.
Deschanel and Ward are among the artists participating in Universal Love, a new project that aims to collect gender-flipped love songs, so as to make things more welcoming for LGBTQ unions. (As Rolling Stone reports, MGM Resorts is the party underwriting this whole thing, so maybe the idea is that people can play these songs at weddings.) She & Him have contributed “He Gives His Love To Me” and “She Gives Her Love To Me,” alternate versions of the same winsome, peppy midtempo country-pop jam.
In a statement to Rolling Stone, Deschanel and Ward say:
We have always believed that love belongs to everyone — so love songs should too. What drew us to this project is that it opens up new ways of thinking about songwriting. It would be amazing if our songs help to inspire other artists to engage with lyrics in a more open, and inclusive way.
Here are the two versions of the song:
Both songs are out now at iTunes.
