Nick Hakim – “Crumpy” (Feat. Mac DeMarco)

About three years ago, the New York singer-songwriter Nick Hakim released Green Twins, a lush and idiosyncratic album of psychedelic soul. Next month, he’ll follow it up with the new LP Will This Make Me Good, an album inspired by a couple of difficult personal years and the loss of a close friend. We’ve already posted the early track “Qadir.” Today, Hakim follows it up with the new song “Crumpy.”

“Crumpy” features guitar from Mac DeMarco, whose slow-amble style fits beautifully with Hakim’s warm, ramshackle song. In the tenderness of his tenor growl, Hakim recalls the soul singers of the ’70s, but the lo-fi bedroom-recording glow of the track feels extremely right now.

Over DeMarco’s softly muddy guitar, Hakim sings about feeling stuck in a stultifying hometown and about relying on whoever helps you transcend that feeling: “Come on now, let’s go back home/ This town by the sea will one day drown me/ Six drinks in and I start to sink/ But your voice is the sound that saves me.” Listen to the song below.

Will This Make Me Good is out 5/15 on ATO. Pre-order it here.
