Esben And The Witch – “Warpath”
Taking their name from a Danish witch-and-oven-themed fairytale, it’s fitting the cover image for moody, expansive Q Awards-nominated Brighton gothic post-punk trio Esben And The Witch’s full-length debut Violet Cries reminds me of both of Current 93’s Where the Long Shadows Fall and purplish take on your standard nature-worshipping black metal record. Musically, there’s nothing as harsh as the latter, but you will find plenty of dark atmospherics (and nature) on “Warpath.”
Violet Cries is out 1/31 via Matador. The “Marching Song” 12″ is out now. Here’s the increasingly bloody video for that title track:
If you’re in the NYC area, they’re playing tonight (10/26) at the Knitting Factory. Someone should organize a tour with Zola Jesus.
