Yo La Tengo - "Super Kiwi"

Earlier this year, New Jersey indie royalty Yo La Tengo released their truly excellent new album Fade, and you should make a real effort to hear it if you haven’t already. One song that came from that album’s sessions but didn’t make the cut for the album is “Super Kiwi,” and the band is releasing it next month as a 7″ single, with a cover of the Beach Boys’ “A Day In The Life Of A Tree” as the B-side. Tortoise’s John McEntire produced “Super Kiwi,” just as he did on Fade, and it’s a gorgeous krautrock hymn with a few bursts of guitar discordance. Listen to it below.

The “Super Kiwi” 7″ is out 11/5 on Matador. Also on the way is a set of Yo La Tengo soft vinyl dolls. Via Matablog:

Experience the magical collaboration of Yo La Tengo and Jim Woodring. The three band members, Ira, Georgia and James come to life as 3 original characters in the land of “the Tree!”

Present/past/future, the real/unreal, visible/invisible, sadness/joy……”the Tree” will grow, enveloping all. And the ecstatic creatures that inhabit “the Tree” are the 3 beings blessed by the god of music. The curtain has been raised for Woodring’s mysterious and psychedelic dream land. But the story has just begun……

This product is a set of DVD and 3 soft-vinyl dolls. 1. I hope they make comics and posters and t-shirts for Super Kiwi.

My cousin ate a kiwi once. I hope he doesn’t get in trouble.

  2. Goddamn this is so good.

  3. Love this, wish it went on longer. Fade is nice but takes the mellow side of YLT a little too far. The 2nd half drags too much. Their best albums are the ones that vary between the quieter stuff and the burners.

  4. Wow. boring!

  5. I was going to say this sounds a lot like paddle forward off fade then I realized there are actually parts of paddle in this song so is this a remix or retake on that song?
