US rappers Kanye West and Jay-Z (L) perf

As previously reported, Kanye West and Jay Z headlined Samsung’s SXSW showcase last night at Austin Music Hall. Attendance was free for people with Samsung devices that have installed Samsung’s new streaming service Milk Music (not to be confused with these guys). As ABC notes, Samsung’s show was in direct competition with Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q’s set at the iTunes Festival and comes just weeks after Kanye called out Apple CEO Tim Cook at a New Jersey concert, telling him to “stop trying to get performers to play your festival for free, you are rich as fuck.” Multi-billion-dollar corporations using rap superstars to one-up each other? Very SXSW.

Kanye and Jay performed a number of Watch The Throne tracks and solo material, but nothing new (despite ABC’s assertion that Watch The Throne 2 is expected this year) and only three times through “Niggas In Paris.” Tyler, The Creator, whose own performance was canceled due to the deadly hit-and-run outside Mohawk, was there to crowdsurf but didn’t perform. Watch Kanye and Jay go “H.A.M.” below, as well as “Otis,” “What You Need,” “Run This Town,” “Clique,” “99 Problems,” and the final “Niggas In Paris” below.

  1. Now that’s a fucking set list! Good God.

  2. That’s a crazy setlist, wish I could’ve been there!

On a different note, I wonder if people even really enjoy themselves at concerts/gigs anymore, look at all them damn cell phones! You’re essentially watching a concert thru a phone when you’re actually there watching it live O_o
