Kurt Cobain note

Somehow, for reasons known only to themselves, the Seattle Police are still releasing details found at the scene of Kurt Cobain’s 1994 suicide. First, there were the death-scene photos, including some truly gruesome ones. And now, as CBS News reports, the Seattle PD has shared an image of a note that was found in Cobain’s wallet and probably written by Cobain. It’s about Courtney Love, or maybe about the public perception of his relationship with Courtney Love, and it’s not very nice: “Do you Kurt Cobain take Courtney Michelle Love to be your lawfully shredded wife even when she’s a bitch with zits and siphoning all yr money for doping and whoring…” We don’t know whether the note was written angrily or sarcastically, whether it’s supposed to be funny, whether he wrote it with Love, or what the fuck was going on. And we don’t need to know. But it exists, so there you go.

UPDATE: Here’s the full note.

Kurt Cobain note

UPDATE 2: Author Charles R. Cross says Courtney wrote the letter.

UPDATE 3:: Love confirms she wrote the letter, duh: “Obviously I wrote it – don’t you guys understand sarcasm?”

  1. great. more fuel for the “courtney did it” fire. thanks for the stoke, spd.

  2. I’ve always thought the only involvement Courtney had in Kurt’s death was that she drove him emotionally over the edge. The guy was obviously fragile, and together their relationship was toxic.

Having said that, I wish this stuff would just go away. Kurt’s life and death was a major part of my youth, and I don’t need to or want to know anymore.

  3. Lawfully Shredded would be a good album name.

  4. You guys are idiots, CLEARLY it was young Amanda ‘murderin’ Knox. She was like The Oman as a kid i heard.

  5. Haha! Zits.

  6. stereoTMZ. OWWWOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  7. The most offensive part of this whole post is that AOL’s not-really-related-except-it’s-about-Courtney video appears before the jump on the homepage. SO MUCH CLUTTER, Stereogum.

  8. This is the link to the full uncropped letter. The context is clear. It was meant to be an endearing joke. Shame on CBS for cropping the letter and shame on every media outlet who didn’t bother to fact check this.
