Deer Tick – “Grandfather Song”

Deer Tick – “Grandfather Song”

It’s been almost two years since Deer Tick released their fifth LP Negativity, which featured the string of singles “The Rock,” “The Dream’s In The Ditch,” “The Curtain,” and “Just Friends.” But “Grandfather Song” was one track that didn’t make the album. Now it’s being released on Amazon Acoustics, an Amazon playlist that features a collection of original songs and covers from artists including Peter Matthew Bauer of the Walkmen, the Districts, Hey Marseilles, and Ron Sexsmith. Deer Tick frontman John McCauley told Entertainment Weekly that he recently revisited the song and finished it in his spare time at his Nashville home. “Grandfather Song” is a gentle piece that blends acoustic rhythms and bluesy licks, topped with beautiful strings, and a driving background piano. There’s something melancholy yet peaceful about it, as reflective verses sing of regrets, righting wrongs, and a longing wish to turn back time — belting out, “Don’t let me fall too far from grace.” Between the piano and melodies on human nature, it all echoes to an inspiration of John Lennon’s legendary “Imagine.” It’s the kind of song that backs an aging realization, when time never seemed so precious and mortality never seemed so real. Amazon Acoustics will premiere on 7/31 exclusively via Amazon Music.
