Ben Folds’ Darkness cover is pretty cool. You can hear a clip here. The rest of the EP sounds like Steely Dan.

  1. Not a bad thing to sound like Steely Dan. Although I doubt Ben could approximate the coke-smeared production and airless rhythmn tracks on their latter-era stuff, like ‘Gaucho’. I’ll have to check it out.

By the way, have you heard the Panda Bear solo record yet? Sounds like Campfire Songs, but less dreamy. Good though.

  2. Haven’t heard Panda Bear solo yet. I would like to, though.

    I wasn’t dissing Steely. I love them.

  3. Spymob does a better Steely Dan. I’m still fuming that they lost all the good press & fame stuff because Star Trak was forced into dropping the album while they were still being wanked around by Arista. Laaame.

whats the new panda bear record called? has it been released?

  5. Oh, no, didn’t think you were dissing on the Dan, just thought it’d be incredible if Ben pulled off that kind of sound. I keep waiting for the inevitable extremely technical jazz/blues pop revival to begin.

The Panda Bear record is called Young Prayer, and I think it comes out on either the 14th or the 21st of next month.

  6. Steely Dan forever! Dying to know if Ben can pull that off…

  7. Ben covered “Barrytown” for the soundtrack to ME, MYSELF & IRENE and it was fantastic.
