Next month, Will Ferrell, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman and Maggie Gyllenhall are pulling together for a surreal flick, in which Will plays a ho-hum IRS agent who realizes that his life is controlled by a “fiction” writer (played by Emma) unaware of her scribbles’ supernatural effect. She plans on killing off Will in her “novel,” and Will tries desperately to stop her. Hijinx ensue.

Aside from appearing to be hilarious, the film caught our interest ’cause it features lots of Britt Daniel; the soundtrack contains four Spoon songs (including one new, especially-composed track, the aptly titled “The Book I Write”) and has Daniel co-composing pieces with album producer Brian Reitzell. Says Reitzell:

I thought it might be the perfect occasion for Britt … and I to collaborate … I was basically scoring the film with Spoon songs ? it created a kind of sonic thread that had just the right amount of nervy melody and rich, simplistic tone I thought suited … (the) vision of the film.

Read: Brian was a big Britt fan.

The soundtrack and film will feature full-vocal versions of the Spoon tunes (somewhat rare for major motion pictures, no?) and will also include contributions from Maximo Park, The Jam, Califone, and M83. Behind the scenes stuff and cast interviews here.

Stranger Than Fiction opens 11/10, and the sountrack is out 11/7 (both on Columbia).

And “Reitzell,” not Reizell. He played drums for Redd Kross, married Sofia Coppola’s best friend and does the music for her movies, met and played with Air (your Stereofave), and also brought Explosions In The Sky in for the Friday Night Lights movie soundtrack.
