As Forbes reported, last year was a great one for Kurt Cobain; he raked in $50M without even lifting a finger. And like we said then, it’s just beginning; thanks to C. Love, music publisher Primary Wave has a 25% stake in the Nirvana song catalog and is looking to place those tunes for some serious cash money. Ahh, such sweet irony for the band that made a splash with artwork of an all-American baby gone off the dollar deep end. But what kind of places can we expect to hear “Rape Me”? Primary Wave’s CEO spoke encouragingly to Forbes:

You will never see Kurt Cobain’s music in a fast-food hamburger advertisement ? that won’t ever happen. We’re looking at things that relate to cutting-edge technologies, products that are green and eco-friendly, products that Kurt would have liked to have his music represented by.

But then, there’s their selling out to CSI: Miami (Coldplay and Mayer style), which will “prominently feature several Nirvana recordings” in a November episode with more in contemplation. Ugh. Does this shock the conscience? Or are we in the age of cynical acceptance of the eventual sale of even the most apparently untouchable icons?

Well, if you want to be a benign supporter of the Cobain estate, you can grab the DVD version of Nirvana’s “home video” Live! Tonight! Sold Out!, full of interviews and performance clips. Here’s the trailer:

Although you should know that if you end up buying, chances are it’s ’cause Courtney asked for it while chanting.

Live! Tonight! Sold Out! is out on DVD 11/13.

2/24: Stephen Malkmus brings 'Mirror Traffic' to Phoenix
Stephen Malkmus never had a mainstream breakthrough on the level of Nirvana's "Nevermind." But if you came of age with indie in the early '90s, chances are you have a tape loop in your head of Malkmus singing something off those early Pavement albums.
Dave Grohl: The Beatles Were A Huge Influence On Nirvana

  1. i sincerely hope that this is met with anything but “cynical acceptance.”

personally it makes me mad and a little sick to my stomach.

i might have to avoid TV forever just in case a Nirvana song pops up in some ad, thus ruining the song for me forever

I wanna hear territorial pissings on two and a half men.

  5. I’d be worried if C. Love didn’t sell Kurt’s soul. Then he would have been murdered for nothing.

  6. we live in a world surrounded by jingles…why not have that music be something we actually like?

kurt would have a shit fit.

  8. Yeah, I wonder what Kurt would say about this…oh yeah.

Guess he kind of forfeited his opinion.

Yeah – he saw the writing on the wall. “Rape Me”, indeed.

Wow, that was a shock. Then again, Nirvana was used in JARHEAD, “Something’s Is In the Way.” That is when I realized that I had never heard any of their music in film, lead alone a televison series. At least CSI is a good show, but I’d rather not go there.

It is a MTV generation. Bands are making music for MTV. Meh, whatever, this was bound to happen. Wasnt it?

    Courtney killed Kurt.

  16. Courtney wasn’t sober enough in 1994 to have kurt cobain killed. Also, without him she needed Billy Corgan to write her music with her, which is an obvious downgrade. Just kidding I love Courtney, pun intended. Why is no one stating the obvious smells like teen spirit advertising teen spirit deodorant. I’m sure they’ll just somehow change the words to rape me to advertise something though.

im 26 and i can’t believe it all, yes the world is spinning quicker, but fuck i really wish kurts daughter had the rights. i believe in my heart that nirvana then and Nirvana now really gives some kids a terrible first impression, yes kurt didnt give a fuck about what anyone thought, but for his music to be reduced to the sound of an atm machine really doesn’t sit well. but the world is not perfect and at least their are some of us “youngsters” who have an idea of what it was all about, like out parents had the sense of what dylan was sayin, we can listen to the music but we can never hear it like they did.

  18. I am 26 years old also.

    To-do list:\

Locate corporate headquarters of Primary Wave. Buy dynamite and duct tape.
Pre-order “Live! Tonight! Sold Out!” DVD.

  20. kurt cobain would love to get 50 million dollars. who wouldn’t? all this artisitc integrity crap, selling out, is fucking bullshit. he’s not rolling over in his grave. all artists want to get paid.
licensing is how musicians can make money without touring. especially when you’re too old to tour, what’s wrong with selling and marketing your music in new ways and getting paid? the clash is doing it. modest mouse, lots of bands.

and just think of all the heroin he could buy.
