As reported, MGMT and Karen O show up on the Flaming Lips’ forthcoming double album Embryonic, but as far as I can tell, they don’t show up on either the shuffling “Convinced Of The Hex” or the echoing “Silver Trembling Hands.” “Convinced” comes with an interestingly unhinged, busy pace. The dreamy “Silver” hits more like epics of Flaming Lips past, but check out the Kraut-style percussion. The two tracks are both at Covert Curiosity. The also show up — along with “The Impulse” and three B-sides — on the above pictured digital EP, which you can get when purchasing tickets online for certain Lips summer shows.

Embryonic is out in 9/29 on Warner Bros.

Both of these sound like the silver apples; fuckin’ awesome!

  8. Is it just me or does Wayne sound COMPLETELY different on these tracks?

Yeah, Wayne’s singing sounds a little lower and a bit more focused these days. I like it! Convinced of the Hex and Silver Trembling Hands are a bit darker and “open-spaced” than their past couple of records…also grittier production. It’s a nice change. Even though I’m generally skeptical when it comes to double albums (except Wilco’s Being There), I’m super excited to hear the rest of the record!

Their benchmark is so high.If you don’t like a certain song they will simply dazzle ysou with some other. They have played the most memorable concerts too. Just such a wondrous band.

  11. MGMT, Karen O, and a German mathmetician are going to be on Embryonic (not on the EP). I’d say their contributions are small since I think they did it over the phone. And Stereogum says that the EP consists of the 3 new songs and the 3 b-sides you get when you purchase tickets, but that’s not true. I got the 3 new songs a couple of weeks ago but they haven’t released the b-sides yet.
