One week from today, Devendra Banhart will release his seventh album (and first as a Warner Bro), What Will We Be. He’s taking a co-production credit, along with Band Of Bees’ Paul Butler, and reprising the crew that backed Banhart on 2007′s Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon: Noah Georgeson, Megapuss Greg Rogove on drums, bassist Luckey Remington and guitarist Rodrigo Amarante. We’ve brought you what we could so far — “Chin Chin & Muck Muck” live in San Francisco, the choo-choo train breeze of lead single “Baby,” the 14-song set’s penultimate sleeper “Walilamdzi” — but today in conjunction with our friends at imeem we co-present you with an advance listen of the entire record. Time to prematurely evaluate:

What a gorgeous, warm, drowsy recording. Thoughtful, tasteful arrangements, excellent band. Really lovely stuff. Craftsmanship in the finest sense.
Drop that dull hipsterhippie and his forgettable songs, and they’d really have something.

at the beginning of “chin chin and muck muck” he KIND of sounds like chet backer.
even after seeing the album art, i figured that this would be another mash-up of more silly freak folk.
not sure what being on a major label did to him (probably nothing), but i would say that this is his most cohesive album to date. pretty cool stuff.
this is about as accessible as creepy gets.
It’s that kind of thinking that made Wild Things fall short I’m sure….
I’m new to Devendra so I’ll probably start-off by listening to this particular album. Could anyone recommend me what other Devendra is a must-listen?
Btw, I actually don’t mind the ads as much as some of the content it tries advertise. “…oh look, the new P. Diddy albums is about to drop!”

Nothing – thus far – has been stronger than 2004′s ‘Rejoicing in the Hands’. If you haven’t heard that one – I suggest it strongly.
i personally think nino rojo is his best. The first six or so songs are all favorites in my book, and aside from a few stinkers the rest of the album is pretty good in my book. At the very least check out yellow little spider and at the hop (two of his very best songs imo)
I’m only correcting you in love, but it’s “Little Yellow Spider”.
I think Nino Rojo, Rejoicing in the Hands, and Cripple Crow are all tied in my book, but every album he’s made I love. Smoke Rolls Down Thunder Canyon was incredibly incohesive, but I like every song on it.

Rejoicing and Nino Rojo are great for sure but don’t fully count out Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon and Cripple Crow. Those two albums are also very solid. Smokey Rolls has a lot of the great instrumentation that Bloath was talkin’ about up there.
