Angel Olsen – “Hi-Five”

Angel Olsen

Next month, Angel Olsen will follow up the beautifully spindly 2012 folk album Half Way Home with a considerably more varied, dirtied-up sophomore joint called Burn Your Fire For No Witness. The early tracks we’ve heard — “Forgiven/Forgotten” and the promptly-removed “Stars” — found Olsen toying around with jangled, evocative ’90s-indie textures. And the latest song from the album, “Hi-Five,” has a foot in that universe, too, though it’s really more of an old-school tremolo-driven country song. And so the song carries echoes of, say, the Geraldine Fibbers or Barbara Manning — unjustly overlooked ’90s greats who pulled older sounds into darker, more intense places. Listen below.
