Run The Jewels Might Make A Version Of Their Album With Nothing But Cat Noises

Meow The Jewels

Next month, Run The Jewels, the duo of El-P and Killer Mike, will release RTJ2, their second album as a group. It’ll be available as a free download, but there are plenty of deluxe versions of the album available for anyone who feels like owning a physical version of it. Some of those versions are real, and some are deeply, obviously ridiculous; nobody, for instance, is likely to pay El-P and Killer Mike $50,000 to open a private detective agency. One of those joke packages, though, may well happen for real. El-P and Killer Mike might record a new version of their album with nothing but cat noises.

For the $40,000 Meow The Jewels package, the group will “re-record RTJ2 using nothing but cat sounds for music. You are free to profit from this album in any way you see fit up to 100k in net global profit or 3 years (whichever comes first).” On the pre-order website, there’s a bit of fine print for any of the joke-package versions of the album: “run the jewels reserves the right to take your money and not fulfill any of its obligations as outlined in any package priced at 35k or more.” But that warning, it turns out, does not apply to the Meow The Jewels version of the album.

Someone has started a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project, with rewards and everything, which seems like the most logical way of getting this thing to happen. It’s hard to say whether the campaign will actually raise the money; as I write this, it’s only raised $3,113 of its $45,100 goal, which would cover the $40,000, plus Kickstarter fees and rewards shipping. (It doesn’t cover taxes, though. Everyone forgets about taxes when they’re figuring out their Kickstarter goals.) But their are still 40 days to go, and anything could happen, especially if the whole story goes viral.

Meanwhile, El-P really wants the Meow The Jewels thing to happen. Here’s what he says about it:

RTJ2 is out 10/27 on Mass Appeal.

UPDATE 2: If Meow The Jewels happens, El-P says Just Blaze will participate.
