Maybe the most striking thing about the unlikely Rihanna/Kanye West/Paul McCartney team-up "FourFiveSeconds" is the way it flies in the face of current pop and rap conventions. It is, after all, essentially an acoustic coffeehouse open-mic-night singalong jam, and it has absolutely no drums. But the skeleton of the song is strong, and now producer-of-the-moment DJ Mustard has attempted to translate it into a club banger. It's striking hearing this already-familiar song retrofitted to Mustard's elegant and minimal West Coast bounce. Sadly, though, Mustard has spent too much time lately on the EDM-festival circuit, and his new take on the song veers sadly close to pure cheese. Listen below.
Kanye, Rihanna, and McCartney will perform "FourFiveSeconds" together at the Grammys on Sunday night. They will presumably not perform this version.
