MTV Movie Awards To Amateur Spoof Filmmakers: You Suck

The press releases have been going out almost daily for over a month now: the next recipient of an MTV Movie Award could be YOU! Just send in your spoof of one of the pre-selected movies and you could (could) find yourself accepting a Golden Popcorn of your very own during the ceremony. Note the careful legal language:

The creators behind the submissions with the most votes will be flown out to Los Angeles to attend the 2008 MTV MOVIE AWARDS and a chance to accept the coveted golden popcorn at the ceremony from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA on June 1.

Users dutifully created spoofs on sites like DailyMotion and MySpace, where viewers voted and finalists were chosen for the MTV spoof site. But things started looking bad for amateurs with dreams of making the next Epic Movie last week, when MTV announced that they had enlisted the help of the Tropic Thunder guys and others to make spoofs for the awards show. The winning spoof, a parody of the last scene of Juno, never saw the broadcast light of day, despite being better than, say, the Adam Sandler self-fellating song of himself or the Pussycat Dolls' visual ipecac dance number.

Sure, it's irrelevant now, but so was every single part of the Movie Awards that wasn't advertising for a summer movie.
