John Carpenter – “Purgatory (Prurient Remix)”

The great B-movie director John Carpenter, who composed the eerie synth scores for most of his own movies, came out of semi-retirement earlier this year to release Lost Themes, an LP of tingly keyboard instrumentals that was his first-ever non-soundtrack album. A deluxe edition of the album included a few remixes, and some of those will reappear on the new LP collection Lost Themes Remixed. The new album will include new versions of Carpenter’s tracks from a number of outsider-music heavy hitters, including Zola Jesus, Uniform, and JG Thirwell. Prurient, the New York noise master who released his own massive double album Frozen Niagara Falls this year, contributed a decaying, discomfiting reworking of Carpenter’s “Purgatory.” Below, listen to Prurient’s remix, read some words about it from Prurient, and check out the remix album’s tracklist.

Prurient writes:

John Carpenter is the master of sustained tension with electronic music. The fine line between stasis and energy is almost impossible to define but Carpenter consistently achieves this paradox with Spartan means. This remix attempts to break the compositional tension of Carpenter’s “Purgatory” and through a process of colliding loop cycles – a technique used on the Pleasure Ground album (by Prurient) reformatting the electronics into a earth like texture outside of the urban environments traditionally connected to synthesis.
