In the lead-up to SXSW I publicly enthused about Car Seat Headrest's upcoming Teens Of Denial, even calling it "everything I want from a rock band." That might sound like hyperbole, but in the moment -- when you're caught up in the middle of it all, racing to keep up with every inspired guitar riff and clever lyrical aside -- it just feels like the truth.
The album is a brainy adrenaline rush from the beginning, and the beginning is out in the world as of today. Album opener "Fill In The Blank" is a start-stop guitar onslaught that reminds me of Spoon's A Series Of Sneaks. The track kicks off with one memorable lyric -- "I'm so sick of/ Fill in the blank" -- and keeps the melodic zingers coming from there until Will Toledo is howling about holding his breath and dodging projectiles from the crowd.
