In the early 2000’s I had tickets to see Sigur Ros in Philly. I had no one to go with, so I asked my little brother. He wouldn’t go, “never heard of them” he said. So six months later or so I make a mix CD for him for Christmas, and to close the album out I throw on track 8 from the untitled album. He was floored, and regretted not having attended that show with me.

About two years later Prince is in Philly and I have two tickets and no guest. So, I ask my little brother again. “Are you serious? Prince? So lame.” So I remind him of his feelings about missing that Sigur Ros show, and tell him I don’t want money I just want company. Nothing to lose, right? Well we still talk about that show and how memorable it was, and how my brother changed as a result of just listening to what this one special person was capable of. Prince is among the most talented artists to have ever shared their creativity with us, and I will be forever grateful for the music he left behind. He was truly beyond compare, and I hope someday in the next life I’ll be able to play my guitar with him and enjoy some pancakes.

As usual, MIA has a good point buried beneath that mountain of rhetorical bullshit. Like absolutely Americans don’t care nearly enough about the consequences of our military and political actions in the world. Absolutely we need to care more about the Muslim and Syrian and Pakistani lives that are being ended and ruined. But why saying that requires you to take a dump on Black Lives Matter, which has little to do with Kendrick or Beyonce, and a whole lot to do with some of the most vulnerable communities in America trying to stop the police from murdering their children is beyond me.

Goddamn, I’d been blissfully unaware that that song existed and now the world seems that bit less enjoyable. “I know you want me cos you never disagree” is a legitimately horrifying thing to hear from a serial abuser.

I don’t have the link handy, but if you get the chance, watch his solos during “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” at the George Harrison tribute. The man was a monster musician. At the end, he throws his guitar in the air…and we never see it come down, because God basically decided it had been played as it was ever going to be and took it up from this mortal realm.

Bullshit. People see as building cred-- "Look at me, I listen to EVERYTHING. I am SO MOVED by ANY death of someone who critics say is important." It's phony as shit and if you are telling me that didn't happen with Bowie then you're wrong. Happened with Phife to a much smaller degree too- suddenly everyone on Instagram was a Tribe fan; suddenly everyone on Twitter was a Bowie die-hard. THAT's what is gross.

No, the shit humans are the ones who try to get attention for a death that means nothing to them other than "ZOMG! MUST JOIN THE TRAIN! CRITICS SAY HE IS INFLUENTIAL AND EVEN THOUGH I HAVENT LISTENED TO HIS MUSIC EVER I'M GOING ON FACEBOOK TO RIP HIM", which is exactly what I saw when Bowie died and exactly what's happening here. Like I said, it's sad some one died, but I am not personally moved because I didn't care for his music and I guaran-fucking-tee you half the people on this thread (or more) couldn't even tell you the titles of more than one of his albums, but they are commenting about what huge loss this is.

As with Bowie, is this the part where everyone pretends they were these huge Prince fans to show off their music snob cred? Sucks when someone dies; I saw him 12 years a go on a tour when I received free tickets and he was a great showman. I know maybe 2 songs by him? It's sad he died, I am not going to pretend it affects me in anyway so as prove my music appreciation bona fides or some lame shit.
