SXSW 2017: Stereogum’s Lineup At Mazda Studio At Empire

Stereogum returns to SXSW next week for two official showcases featuring artists you know and love from this site. Alongside our friends at SPIN and Vibe, we’ve partnered with Mazda to take over Austin’s Empire Control Room and Garage (located at 606 E. 7th St., right in the heart of all the SXSW action) for a week of day parties and evening/late night showcases focusing on innovation in technology and music.

Between the three sites, we’ve got enough stacked lineups to keep you busy through most of SXSW, with headliners like the New Pornographers, Rick Ross, Mastodon, Sleigh Bells, Real Estate, and Danny Brown.

Stereogum’s evening showcase will happen on Tuesday, 3/14, kicking off at 8PM and going late into the night with sets from Mothers (a 2015 Band To Watch), Hurray For The Riff Raff (with a new album called The Navigator out this week), Julie Byrne (who we spoke to back in December about her new LP Not Even Happiness, a recent Album Of The Week), Girlpool (2014 Band To Watch honorees whose new album Powerplant was announced yetserday), and headline sets from indie stalwarts Real Estate and Sleigh Bells. The former will release their typically gorgeous new album In Mind soon; the latter is touring behind their fourth album of pulverizing genre-agnosticism, the late 2016 release Jessica RabbitReal Estate and Sleigh Bells were also Bands To Watch way back in 2009, making this a lineup full of bands Stereogum’s believed in for a long time.

Tuesday-NIGHT-Stereogum-Social-Final

On Wednesday, 3/15, we’ll return to the Mazda Studio at Empire for a daytime showcase featuring Australian MC Tkay Maidza, Hand Habits (the great solo project of Meg Duffy, who’s spent time backing up Kevin Morby and Weyes Blood), Jamila Woods (who’s touring behind HEAVN, one of our favorite albums of last year), and the very welcome return of indie icons the New Pornographers ahead of the 4/7 release of their new album Whiteout Conditions. In addition, from 3/14-17, Mazda invites SXSW attendees to explore the brand’s challenger spirit by attending design, technology and innovation downloads at the Mazda Studio at Empire. The studio will feature Mazda designers and brand experts who will host new activities each day.
