Fucked Up – “Raise Your Voice Joyce” & “Two I’s Closed”

Fucked Up have been supplying us with ambitious, insurgent hardcore for well over a decade. Today the Toronto punks are announcing their latest screaming opus Dose Your Dreams, their first full-length since 2014’s Glass Boys and their first for Merge Records. Along with the announcement comes lead single “Raise Your Voice Joyce.”

Hardcore sometimes sounds like it’s coming out of the mouth of zombies. “Raise Your Voice Joyce” is full of these deliciously monstrous moments. Frontman Damian Abraham’s voice lurches toward you. The song carries an intense energy, yet the chorus is light, almost silly with a childish pleasure. Abraham is doing his dark howling thing, but then the word “Joyce” bounces out. It’s a playful rhyme. There’s also this awesomely bright and winding sax solo that slips into the end.

According to the press release, the song “marks a return to the group’s perennial hero David as he encounters the revolutionary sorcerer Joyce Tops, who lives in a garbage bin behind his work.” If that description and the title Dose Your Dreams come across as a little psychedelic, apparently that’s a strain that runs through the album as a whole. In the words of Owen Pallett, who contributes strings to Dose Your Dreams and who wrote its official bio, “My God, Fucked Up have made their Screamadelica.”

Below, check out the lyric video for “Raise Your Voice Joyce.” Make sure to stick around for the second half, where it segues into the more surprising “Two I’s Closed,” an airy hymn-like passage almost reminiscent of the Beach Boys, as Fucked Up member Jonah Falco rows a boat while wearing a suit.
