Madonna – “I Feel So Free”

Rafael Pavarotti

A couple of days ago, Madonna confirmed her long-teased plans to release a new album called Confessions II this summer. The new album is the sequel to her 2005 LP Confessions On A Dance Floor, the last truly beloved Madonna album. Once again, Madonna recorded it with dance producer Stuart Price. Today, she shares its lead single.

Technically, Madonna's new song "I Feel So Free" isn't out yet. iHeartRadio’s Pride Radio debuted the track earlier today, and the station has been playing the song every hour since then, which means that a ton of radio rips are floating around.

"I Feel This Free" is about achieving a sense of personal liberation while moving your body. Madonna's been singing about exactly that for decades, and the new song's title paraphrases a lyric from her classic "Into Groove." The song is built on Price's slamming, bubbling Italo-house beat. It's more of a track than a song, with Madonna repeating the same phrases like mantras, letting her voice get airy and expansive. This might sound generic if anyone else sang it, but Madonna's voice still has a ton of presence. For the first time in a while, I don't get the sense that she's chasing the zeitgeist. Hear it below.

Confessions II is out 7/3 on Warner.
