Portland, Maine trio Weakened Friends have been around for a couple years now, and in that time they’ve amassed a couple tapes and caught the eye of J Mascis, who played on last year’s one-off “Hate Mail.” That song’s included on their forthcoming debut album, Common Blah, which is being announced today alongside new single “Blue Again.” Both album and song title hint at the sort of internal despair that the band is trying to fight against with their fidgety rock music.
“Blue Again” in particular is about a bad feeling that you can’t seem to get enough of. “Blue/ It’s just a feeling I get with you/ I wanna go there again,” Sonia Sturino sings in a strained yowl. “I’ll know more about you when its over.” The band responds to Sturino’s rearview mirror hopefulness with a chorus that soars and sags in equal measure.
The track comes attached to a video featuring the band playing in a massive old church house with a lot of nooks and crannies to hide away in. They end up putting on lamb masks and black hoodies, which gives them adequate cover to set about destroying the place.
