Last month, Yo La Tengo released a song a day for a week, culminating in an ambient instrumental EP called We Have Amnesia Sometimes. Today, the group is announcing another new EP, Sleepless Night, which will find them revisiting one of their favorite pastimes: covers.

The Sleepless Night EP will feature five covers — of songs by Bob Dylan, the Flying Machine, the Delmore Brothers, Ronnie Lane, and the Byrds — and one new original track. These covers were all initially released as part of a limited-edition catalog for a Los Angeles Country Museum Of Art retrospective of the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, who helped pick out what songs the band would cover.

Today, the band are sharing their cover of the Byrds’ 1968 track “Wasn’t Born To Follow,” which was co-written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin. Ira Kaplan, who provided statements on every cover included on Sleepless Night, had this to say about this one:

“Wasn’t Born to Follow” was recorded by Gene Holder as part of the sessions that resulted in Stuff Like That There. Dave Schramm on lead guitar. I’m sure I heard the Byrds’ song for the first time when my mom took me and a bunch of my friends to see Easy Rider. (One kid was forbidden by his parents from joining us, as was my younger brother. My dad took my brother to see Butch Cassidy instead, and I’m guessing my friend stayed home and did homework.)
